School Board selects student School Board representatives for 2021-2022

The Hampton School Board selected Muhammed Al Saffar, a rising junior at Hampton High School and Tamia Kelly, also a rising junior at Hampton High School, as the student representatives to the School Board for the 2021-2022 school year.

The students were selected from a pool of applicants who submitted applications to the School Board. The Board conducted formal interviews with each of the applicants. The two students will become the 2021-2022 representatives pending the Hampton City School Board’s approval at its July 7, 2021, meeting.

Muhammed, an International Baccalaureate student, is a member of Key Club, Chrome Club, Executives Club, National Junior Honor Society, Tri M Music Honor Society, Youth and Government, junior varsity soccer, marching band, symphonic band, concert band, jazz band, steel drum band ensemble, and the Boule Scholar’s Program. He has also served as a Leadership Development Institute Ambassador and volunteered for the Commonwealth Catholic Charity.

Tamia, also an International Baccalaureate student, is a member of the wrestling team and served as president of both the Robotics and Political Analysis clubs. In addition, she has served as a YMCA youth and government representative, volunteered at Blue Bird Gap Farm, helped with meal preparation for youth during summer months at Zion Baptist Church, and served as a tutor for the Asian Passion Program.

The role of the representative is to speak on behalf of Hampton City Schools students on issues and policies that directly affect the student body. This a non-voting role for the student. However, they do play an active role in Board discussions.

We wish both Muhammed and Tamia the best of luck in this very important role of serving as a voice for their peers.
