Angela Byrd-Wright expands role to serve as HCS equity leader

Dr. Angela Byrd-Wright, Hampton City Schools (HCS) mathematics curriculum leader, has an expanded role within our school division. Byrd-Wright will serve as the division equity leader along with her duties as the mathematics curriculum leader. This expanded leadership role will assist in advancing the division’s commitment to equity by using the lens of equity to focus, prioritize, and manage the dynamic scope of culturally responsive leadership, culturally responsive teaching, and culturally responsive curriculum into the framework of the organizational structure of Hampton City Schools.

Among Byrd-Wright's duties will be to lead the division in defining equity aligned with research and grounded state and national guidelines; to provide guidance on the current state and federal policies and procedures related to equity; to lead interactive, individualized, and meaningful professional learning related to culturally responsive and inclusive practices; to participate in data discussions with school leadership teams; to ensure that culturally responsive and inclusive practices are embedded in the curriculum; and to consult and design strategies that complement and support social-emotional learning.

Byrd-Wright has been with in HCS for 10 years, serving as a math coach and the principal at Lindsay Middle School. Most recently, she served as the division secondary mathematics teacher specialist for two years before being appointed to the mathematics curriculum leader. She has also been a principal with Franklin City Public Schools, an assistant principal in Gloucester County, and taught secondary mathematics in Newport News. 

Trena Hatcher, executive director of student support shared, “Equity begins with access and opportunity. In HCS, this work is ongoing and interwoven into the curriculum and into our efforts to equip students with social emotional learning skills. As equity leader, Dr. Byrd-Wright will ensure that systems and processes are in place to support high expectations and successful outcomes for all. In this position, she will lead training and provide on-going support to administrators and teachers. Her support will assist school staff as they strive to affirm and engage every student in reaching the goal of being college, career, and life ready.”
