Tiffany Hardy, director of student services, earns doctorate

Congratulations to Dr. Tiffany Hardy, Hampton City Schools (HCS) director of student services, on the successful defense of her dissertation on April 2, 2021. The title of Hardy's dissertation is Institutionalized Perceptions of Student Behavior and the Student Conduct Paradigm Shift in Virginia's Public Schools

Trena Hatcher, executive director of student support, shared that Hardy has played an integral role in leading the work to redesign our HCS student code of conduct. While the division was not obligated yet by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), Hardy saw the value in the prevention-oriented, instructional and equitable approach. She initiated a complete rewrite of the policies and documents to ensure students, staff and families would have ample time to adjust to this new approach to student behavior and conduct. Not only will the results of Hardy's dissertation provide important research on a timely topic for all Virginia public educators, but this qualitative data will be of enormous value to HCS as the division continues to support staff in fully implementing the new Virginia model.

Hardy received a bachelor's degree in English and secondary education from The College of William and Mary, a master's in educational administration from Old Dominion University, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Old Dominion University. She has served in Hampton City Schools for 26 years in multiple capacities. Prior to her present position she served as an English teacher, assistant principal, K-12 English language arts curriculum leader, and high school principal. She has also been selected to serve on work teams and task forces, lead professional development, and present at conferences at the local, state, and national levels. Hardy says her professional life is inspired by Nelson Mandela's words, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
