Michelle Johnson of Moton Early Childhood Center receives Labor Union Leadership Award

Michelle Johnson, a teacher at Moton Early Childhood Center, was awarded the Labor Union Leadership Award from the Hampton Democratic Committee at the 17th Annual Labor Unions and Community Leaders Brunch on Monday, September 2, 2024.

Johnson serves in multiple leadership roles including special education instructional leader, building case manager, and mentor, where she supports both students and fellow educators. She is also active in the Hampton Education Association (HEA) and has served as HEA vice president, treasurer, and currently serves as a member at large and the building representative for her school.

Johnson’s union activities include attending executive board meetings, rallies, and conventions. She has rallied at the state capital, advocating for higher pay, collective bargaining, and a safe return to schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. Beyond her professional commitments, Johnson co-organizes the annual Tissues for Teachers campaign, which provides essential supplies to Hampton City Schools' teachers, ensuring healthy and clean classrooms, with School Board member Ann Cherry.

Upon receiving the award, the presenter said, “Ms. Johnson's dedication, leadership, and advocacy have made a lasting impact on her students, colleagues, and community, earning her recognition as a distinguished educator and community leader.”

Congratulations on this outstanding award.
