More about the VSBA Honorable Mention Recognition

The Student Parent Food Show, hosted by the Hampton City Schools Food and Nutrition Services department in September of 2023, brought together approximately 150 students and family members for an evening of culinary exploration and nutrition education. This event served as a platform to introduce new menu items for the 2023-2024 school year while offering a sneak peek into the development of upcoming offerings for the 2024-2025 academic session. With interactive nutrition education, engaging activities, and a festive atmosphere, the Food Show aimed to promote healthy eating habits and foster a sense of community among students, parents, and staff.

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the opportunity for attendees to sample a variety of new products slated for inclusion in school menus. From wholesome entrees to nutritious snacks, students and parents alike had the chance to taste-test and provide feedback on potential additions to the school menu lineup. This hands-on approach not only allowed stakeholders to voice their preferences but also empowered them to play a role in shaping the dining experience for the entire school community.

In addition to culinary delights, the event offered nutrition education opportunities. The department's nutrition coordinator was on hand to provide insights into the importance of balanced eating habits and the nutritional value of various menu items. Families had the chance to learn about USDA regulations governing school meals and compliance in food service operations around our reimbursable meals. Through informative displays and demonstrations, attendees gained a deeper understanding of school meals and nutrition.
