Four HCS schools receive the 2024-2025 Board of Education Highest Achievement Award

Barron Fundamental Elementary School, Bethel High School, Kecoughtan High School, and Mary W. Jackson Fundamental Elementary School are recognized as four of 92 schools across Virginia earning the Board of Education Highest Achievement Award. This award is based on performance during the 2023-2024 school year.

Schools recognized for Highest Achievement demonstrated high levels of success across all school quality indicators, including success in narrowing achievement gaps, as well as:

  • Achieve Performance Level One for reading, mathematics, and science based on the student pass rate (which does not include growth measures) for the “all students” group in the school, as well as for each student group in the school.

    • In addition, schools with two student groups could have no more than a five-percentage point difference between the performance of each student group and the “all students” group; schools with three or more student groups could have no more than a ten-percentage point difference between the performance of each student group and the “all students” group.
  • Achieve at Level One in the Chronic Absenteeism, Graduation and Completion Index (GCI), and Dropout Rate school quality indicators.

“We are extremely proud of Barron Elementary, Mary Jackson Elementary, Bethel High, and Kecoughtan High for receiving the Highest Achievement Award as part of the Virginia Board of Education’s 2024-2025 Exemplar School Recognition program,” said Dr. James Harris, chief academic officer for Hampton City Schools. “This esteemed accolade highlights schools that demonstrate outstanding academic performance, unwavering dedication to student success, and a commitment to continuous improvement. The achievement speaks volumes about the quality of education, innovation, and collaborative efforts within our schools. It reflects the hard work and dedication of not only our students but also the exceptional leadership of our educators, support staff, and the strong partnerships with families and the community.”
