Family engagement is recognized during the month of November

The HCS Title I family engagement program focuses on providing direct and intentional outreach to families, specifically families of our low-performing students, students with special needs, and those who encounter emergencies. Their goal is to work collaboratively with Title I administrators, teachers, parents/guardians, and community partners to increase student achievement and enhance the overall school experiences of our students.

Last school year, each Title I family engagement specialist (FES) successfully created and launched new virtual Family Engagement Resource Centers to provide consistency with support and to increase their intentional outreach efforts to families while providing a framework to utilize both virtually and in-person. As a result, they saw a significant increase in parent/guardian engagement and participation in virtual events and parent meetings.

Additionally, the FES team increased their intentional outreach efforts by 56% using their G.R.O.W. visits and meetings model. The purpose of G.R.O.W. (Getting Resources and Opportunities for the Whole Family) visits (or home visits) and meetings are to use research-based strategies to facilitate successful home visits and home and school partnerships.

During the 2021-2022 school year, FES is contiuing to build their hybrid model of family engagement in order to support families both in-person and virtually. In addition, they are also:

  • Utilizing Dr. Steven Constantino’s Engage Every Family Framework
  • Engaging families by sharing resources that support student learning at home and strengthen the home and school connection.
  • Utilizing their virtual resource center (FES website) to connect families to community resources for household support, childcare, and services.
  • Facilitating virtual meetings with their family engagement team (formerly known as the action team), parent chats, teacher engagement professional learning sessions, and virtual family engagement events.

To show her appreciation to the family engagement specialists in the schools, family engagement coordinator Chanda Epps treated the FES from each school to a special to-go lunch following a meeting.
