Turning Tires into Treasures: Asbury Elementary's innovative recycled tire planter project

In a heartwarming display of environmental stewardship and community collaboration, fifth-grade students at Asbury Elementary School transformed discarded tires into vibrant gardens, thanks to a grant from Ask HRGreen. Spearheaded by Crystal Britt-Smith, the project not only beautifies the school grounds but also instills in students a deeper appreciation for nature and sustainability.

The initiative began when Britt-Smith wrote and secured a $300 grant in September. Students dove excitedly into researching the ideal location, necessary soil composition, and effective natural weed prevention methods for their garden. Armed with knowledge, they embarked on the journey to repurpose old tires into thriving planters. With the guidance of dedicated fifth-grade teachers Jamie Patterson, Jenifer Price, and Hallie Paige, the students laid a weed barrier of cardboard and filled the tire planters with nutrient-rich soil, ensuring optimal conditions for plant growth.

Bloxom's Nursery, which provided information, support, and beautiful plants including perennials like ice plant, Dianthus, Penstemon, and mammoth sunflower seeds, played a crucial role in the project's success. Additionally, Firestone Complete Auto Care in Hampton stepped up by donating the tires, further exemplifying the power of community support in driving positive change.

Throughout the implementation process, students exhibited enthusiasm and dedication, actively participating in every stage of the project. From preparing the planters to carefully planting each seed and seedling, their hands-on involvement fostered a sense of ownership and pride in their accomplishments.

As Britt-Smith has witnessed first-hand, “Students greatly benefit by beautifying their school, surroundings and simply nurturing nature. We made great memories completing this project!”

Fifth grader Jarrell Dixon was so moved by the work of his classmates and teachers that he announced, “This has been so fun! I am going to ask my mom if we can do this at our house.”
