200+ Scholars recognizes 189 students from Hampton city high schools

During a breakfast on May 18, 2024, at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men Inc. recognized 189 students from high schools in Hampton City Schools who have a 3.0 or better grade point average. Over 1,000 students were honored from Chesapeake, Gloucester, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Surry, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg-James City County, and York County.

The annual Scholars Breakfast is known as one of the region’s premier events honoring black male academic excellence. 

Since 1998, more than 9,000 African American males graduating from public and private high schools with a 3.0 or better grade point average have been honored. The Scholars Breakfast and recognition is a part of the organization’s combined education/community initiatives that include mentoring, school visitations, and support of community educational efforts. James Gray, the vice mayor of Hampton, is the president of the organization.

Hampton had the second highest number of honorees following only Virginia Beach Public Schools.
