Student poets take the mic: George P. Phenix PreK-8 School students celebrate book release with poetry reading and signing event

Twenty-one bright young voices from George P. Phenix PreK-8 School are now officially published authors. These remarkable student poets were selected for publication in the 2025 edition of Make Some Noise VII: A Youth Poetry Anthology, a powerful collection celebrating the voices, visions, and vibrant imaginations of today’s youth.

In honor of their literary achievement, the school hosted a celebratory book signing and poetry reading on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the school. This event coincides with National Poetry Month and was an inspiring evening of spoken word, creative expression, and community celebration.

During the event, each featured poet took the stage to read one of their published poems aloud,

sharing personal reflections on identity, resilience, and the world around them. Following the reading, students participated in a book signing where families, friends, and guests could receive autographed copies from these newly published authors.

“We are thrilled to uplift the voices of our students in this way,” says editor and English teacher Terry A. O’Neal, who spearheaded the anthology. “Their words are honest, bold, and full of promise. This book is more than a milestone—it’s a movement.”

VII captures the dynamic spirit of Hampton Roads youth, with poems that explore themes of culture, love, nature, identity, and personal growth. The anthology offers readers a glimpse into the hearts and minds of tomorrow’s leaders—those who understand the power of storytelling as a tool for connection and change.
