Hampton City Schools Future Educators Scholarship

At the meeting of the Hampton School Board on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, the Board unanimously voted to authorize a one-time payment to the Hampton Education Foundation, Inc. of $160,000 from the fiscal year 2022-2023 local contribution. These funds will establish a Hampton City Schools Future Educators Scholarship to be used to grant scholarships to Hampton City Schools students pursuing careers in public education.

One goal of the Hampton City Schools 2021-2026 Strategic Plan is to attract, develop, and retain exceptional staff with a focus to staff 100% of the division’s instructional positions with highly-qualified employees. 

Hampton City Schools has experienced the impacts of the national teacher shortage as the division has worked diligently to staff classrooms with high-quality teachers across various subject areas and grades. Enrollment in teacher-education programs and teacher preparation programs continue to experience declines. 

As the school division continues to invest resources and explore unique ways to attract, develop, and retain exceptional staff, the $160,000 from Hampton City Schools to the Hampton Education Foundation, Inc., will establish a permanent endowment for the benefit of Hampton City Schools students pursuing teaching careers in public education. 

Superintendent Dr. Jeffery Smith shared, “This one-time payment of local funds is possible due to the strong partnership and collaboration with Hampton’s local government.” Funds distributed from the endowment shall be used for scholarships for students.
