Peake students perform at the VMEA Conference
We are continuing to celebrate Music In Our Schools Month by congratulating the following students for their performance at the Virginia Music Educators Association Conference in the Elementary Music Educators Association Orff Ensemble. The students prepared on their own and passed off their music to their teacher. They participated in their concert with students from around the state and as an educational event for teachers from school systems.
“We are proud of the students and their music teacher for their outstanding performance and for representing themselves, their families, their school, and our community to such a high level. Through rhythm, movement, and teamwork, these elementary students showcase the creativity and enthusiasm that make coming to school a joy every day,” said Kelly Dee, visual and performing arts curriculum leader.

Orff percussion refers to a specialized set of instruments (xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels) and unpitched instruments (drums, shakers, wood blocks) designed for music education, often featuring removable bars to facilitate accessible and hands-on learning. Developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman in the 1920s, these instruments are central to the Orff-Schulwerk approach, which combines music, movement, drama, and speech to encourage improvisation and ensemble playing in children.
