KHS teacher selected as Residency Fellow for the Democracy and Capitalism Teacher Institute at UVA’s Democracy and Capitalism Lab

A Hampton City Schools educator is continuing to expand opportunities for students through participation in a nationally recognized fellowship focused on civic education.

After attending the Democracy and Capitalism Teacher Institute (DCTI) in the summer of 2024, James Kimbrough, IV, World History II and Virginia/United States Government teacher at Kecoughtan High School, returned in summer 2025 as a featured panelist, leading a 90-minute discussion on how the program’s content and resources have been successfully implemented in the classroom. The session highlighted student engagement and real-world connections to complex topics surrounding democracy and economic systems.

DCTI is hosted by the Democracy and Capitalism Lab within the Karsch Institute of Democracy at the University of Virginia and is designed to help high school teachers deepen their understanding of the foundations, intersections, and evolving nature of democracy and capitalism. The program focuses on strengthening knowledge of free markets and free societies, exploring effective instructional strategies, analyzing key primary sources, and addressing contemporary “hot button” issues in meaningful and balanced ways.

Building on this experience, Kimbrough has been selected for the program’s inaugural Residency Fellowship, launching in summer 2026. From May through October, he will collaborate with university faculty to develop lesson plans, instructional resources, and classroom activities for high school teachers nationwide.

This opportunity reflects Hampton City Schools’ commitment to providing students with engaging, relevant learning experiences that prepare them to think critically and participate actively in civic life.

Congratulations to James Kimbrough on this outstanding achievement and honor.
