Dave Johnson of Tarrant Middle School earns doctorate

Congratulations to Dave Johnson, assistant principal at Tarrant Middle School, who earned his doctorate from the College of William & Mary in December of 2024. Dr. Johnson’s dissertation was titled, A Descriptive Program Evaluation of Minoritized Students’ Perceptions Regarding the Efficacy of a High School’s College & Career Academy Structure.

Johnson began his career with Hampton City Schools in 2018 as a career & technical education teacher for Phoebus High School where he also served as the CTE instructional lead and as the team lead for the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism, Freshman Academy, and Academy of Cybersecurity, Engineering, & Robotics. He is retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel after a 22-year career culminating as the professor of military science for Virginia State University. 


He has a bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State University in interdisciplinary studies, a post-baccalaureate endorsement in marketing education from Old Dominion University, a master’s degree in public policy administration from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, a masters from Webster University in business administration, and a masters in higher education administration from the University of Louisville. 


“The Tarrant Bulldogs are very proud of Dr. Johnson,” said Tarrant principal Carla Montgomery. “We teach our students the importance of perseverance, dedication and being intentional about everything that they do. Dr. Johnson achieving this doctorate is an example of just that. His achievement is a testament of his commitment to being a lifelong learner.”
