Bethel High School named to the VHSL Sportsmanship Honor Roll

Bethel High School is one of 179 schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia that is being recognized by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) for the fall VHSL Sportsmanship Honor Roll. To earn this recognition, a school may not have a player or coach ejected, or programs placed on warning status for the 2022-2023 fall season.

Teaching and holding student-athletes responsible for positive sportsmanship helps to prepare them for graduation and life. The Portrait of a Hampton Graduate teaches this by emphasizing the student:

  • demonstrates mindfulness of self, others, and personal journey
  • builds connects and works with individuals and diverse communities

“We are very proud of our student athletes and coaches for making the fall VHSL honor roll. The high expectation of good conduct and sportsmanship was met by all students and coaches during the fall season,” said BHS principal Ralph Saunders.

Sportsmanship is defined by Merriam-Webster as “conduct (such as fairness, respect for one’s opponent, and graciousness in winning or losing) becoming to one participating in a sport.” VHSL activities are an extension of the classroom and teaching sportsmanship is clearly an essential part of the education process. Sportsmanship is one of greatest skills that we can instill in our student athletes.

“Here at Bethel, we believe sports are about more than skills and scores,” said BHS athletic director DeRocke Croom. “We develop our athletes' character by teaching sportsmanship values and celebrating players who demonstrate good sportsmanship. Not only do we want to help students to become better athletes, but we also want to help them be better people.”

We thank the student-athletes, coaches, school staff, and community members of Bethel High School who are being recognized during the fall season.
