Bethel High School teacher featured in UVA partnership highlighting excellence in chemistry education
Through the American Association of Chemistry Teachers, a division of the American Chemical Society, Bethel High School chemistry teacher Katie Harlan has been actively engaged in a yearlong coaching partnership with Dr. Jelena Samonina of the University of Virginia (UVA). This collaborative program is designed to strengthen connections between university professors and high school educators, fostering the exchange of innovative instructional strategies and best practices in science education.
Harlan’s work alongside Dr. Samonina reflects Bethel High School’s continued commitment to instructional excellence and professional growth. Their partnership has not only enhanced classroom practices but also contributed to a broader impact on chemistry education.
Their collaboration was recently recognized in a University of Virginia publication titled “Dr. Samonina Broadens the Impact of Chemistry Education Beyond UVA,” which highlights the meaningful work being done to bridge higher education and K–12 classrooms.
“At Bethel High School, we are committed to ensuring our students receive high-quality instruction grounded in innovation and real-world connections. Partnerships like this exemplify our dedication to academic excellence and continuous growth. We are so proud of Mrs. Harlan and the work she is doing to elevate teaching and learning,” said Dr. Tanya V. Howard, executive principal of Bethel High School.
