HCS art teachers participate in professional development at the Chrysler Museum

Twenty-two teachers from Hampton City Schools visited the Chrysler Museum of Art on Saturday, December 3, 2022, for a day of professional development and art making. They enjoyed a tour, conversation, and activity in the exhibition To See a World in a Grain of Sand in the Glass Project Space gallery. The city of Hampton held a significant place in the exhibition’s contents and research since the exhibition features artwork created with sands collected from Fort Monroe.

 

The participants also enjoyed a conversation and tour with curator Chelsea Pierce in the exhibition Black Orpheus: Jacob Lawrence and the Mbari Club. They discussed how places and cultural exchanges are essential themes in the exhibition narrative. 

 

In the Education Workshop, our educators used a wide range of materials to create art to reflect on the themes and exhibitions experienced during the day. They also reflected on the day’s events, shared what they created, and discussed ways to apply what we they learned in the classroom.

 

The teachers enjoyed a day of professional development and team building. They were also treated to lunch and received a glass fusing kit. A huge thank you to Emily Cayton, school and teacher programs coordinator at the Chrysler Museum, for securing an international grant to make this possible.
