Spratley Gifted Center student shows creativity in song about substance abuse prevention

One huge challenge to teaching is making the content relevant and interesting to students. Health and physical education teacher Tanner Kling at Spratley Gifted Center did just that when he gave students a choice of ten different topics to do their culminating project on the substance abuse prevention unit for his class. Students could create an infographic, slideshow, video or song. Devin Wilkins, a seventh grade student in the class, chose the topic Why someone should lead a drug-free lifestyle and wrote and performed a hip-hop song.

In less than a week Devin wrote the lyrics, produced the beat and recorded the song about why people should say no to drugs. It is obvious from his finished product that Devin spent a lot of time and effort on the project.

Devin’s song was such a big hit with his teacher and the other students in his class that Kling shared it with his other classes. He said the reaction was the same and everyone loved it.

“When I heard Devin's song I was at a loss for words,” said Kling. “All I could do was jam! Devin has a true talent and I am glad this project was something he and other students enjoyed.”
