Spratley Gifted Center teacher Micki Garnes receives the W!se 2019-2020 Gold Star Teacher Award

Congratulations to Micki Garnes, a teacher at Spratley Middle School. Garnes, who teaches keyboarding and computer applications; principles of business and marketing; and economics and personal finance is a recipient of the W!se 2019-2020 Gold Star Teacher Award. She is the only teacher in HCS to teach the economics and personal finance class to eighth graders. This class is generally taught to high school students.

To be eligible for the Gold Star Award, Garnes’ students had to achieve at least a 93% overall passing rate on the W!se Financial Literacy Certification Test in at least one of her classes during the 2019-2020 school year.

Ron Holloman, assistant principal at Spratley said, “I've worked with Mrs. Garnes since 2016 and she consistently has demonstrated her professionalism, integrity, cooperation and love for her students! It truly is a joy to work FOR Mrs. Garnes!”

“Ms. Garnes has been an exemplary teacher,” said Spratley Principal Paul Lawrence. “She brings her lessons to life and shows her students how to use their learning in the real world. She is also an amazing teammate. She is always the first person to volunteer to help with a duty or cover a class. We are so happy that she is getting this much-deserved recognition.”

ABOUT THE W!SE PROGRAM
At the center of their financial literacy initiatives is the Financial Literacy Certification program, a groundbreaking innovation in financial education for high school students. The goal of the program is simpleā€”to help high school students graduate as financially capable young adults. Participating high schools teach a course or unit on personal finance and then administer the national, standardized Financial Literacy Certification Test.

To support instruction, W!SE provides professional development and instructional resources including webinar training, a detailed curriculum outline aligned with national and state standards, a comprehensive resources directory and online practice quizzes. Pretesting is also available.
