HCS wins Meritorious Budget Award for 12th consecutive year

The Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International has awarded Hampton City Schools its Meritorious Budget Award for excellence in budget presentation during the 2020-2021 budget year. This is the 12th consecutive year the division has received the award.

The Meritorious Budget Awards (MBA) program promotes and recognizes excellence in school budget presentation and enhances school business officials' skills in developing, analyzing, and presenting a school system budget. After a rigorous review by professional auditors, the award is conferred only on school districts that have met or exceeded the program’s stringent criteria.

“It is an honor for the Hampton City Schools finance department to be awarded the Association of School Business Officials International 2020–2021 Meritorious Budget Award,” said Brittany Dortch, chief financial officer. “It is an example of the continued commitment to assuring that the school system's resources are efficiently and effectively used and that there is clear and concise communication to all stakeholders.”

“Districts that apply to the MBA or Pathway to the MBA programs recognize the importance of presenting a high-quality, easy-to-understand budget internally and to the community,” said ASBO International Executive Director David J. Lewis. “By participating in the programs, not only do districts have access to the tools and resources they need to communicate the district’s goals and objectives clearly, they demonstrate their commitment to upholding nationally recognized budget presentation standards. This award reflects your district’s commitment to sound fiscal management and budgetary policies.”

The following comment was included in the report from ASBO International:

“The (HCS) budget is an excellent document, which includes a wealth of information in graphic and narrative form. The document is user-friendly for the average taxpayer with lots of data presented in different forms to meet the needs of varied users. Many components are suitable, stand-alone documents. The District is to be congratulated for their budget submission to the Meritorious Budget Award.”
