HCS awarded $1.2 million from the VDOE for extended-year and year-round school learning programs
Hampton City Schools has been awarded $1.2 million in extended-year and year-round school learning grants from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) for the 2020-2021 school year. Bethel High School, Hampton High School, Kecoughtan High School, and Phoebus High School will each receive $300,000.These funds were awarded in addition to four grants of $818,656 that were awarded last year.
The funds will be used to provide support for scaling up and expanding instructional supports, enrichments, and scaffold work-based learning opportunities to all students in grades nine through twelve.
This is the third year of implementation. All four high schools received planning grants. BHS, HHS and PHS received implementation grants for 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21. This is the second grant for KHS. The first was received in 2018-19. The funding supports after-school, Saturday and summer programs to include the following:
- Summer Bridge - week-long orientation and high school transition program for rising ninth graders
- Academy League 1.0 - 55 hours of out-of-school time devoted to providing ninth and tenth grade students opportunities for self-discovery and career and industry exploration
- Summer STEM Career Camp for Rising Sophomores (2020) - three week (12 day), 60-hour STEM summer camp designed to immerse freshmen in career and academic explorative STEM projects that help freshmen transition into their selected career-themed academy
- Summer Business Institute for Rising Juniors and Seniors - intensive four-week camp that provides students with real-world challenges to solve
- Career Contenders - creates space and a place for students to demonstrate their developed skill sets in challenge based experiences and student competitions sponsored by businesses, trade associations, and student organizations
- Career Contenders Extreme - brings together students from all four high schools and multiple academies to address a real-world challenge
- BizTalk - gives students an opportunity to meet with business people who share their passion for their work while talking about their careers and describing what they do and how they do it
- Summer Internships - 10-week paid and unpaid summer internship program for 30 to 40 rising juniors and seniors
The Extended Enrichment Learning (EEL) programs provide expanded access to academic instruction, enrichments, and work-based learning experiences. In addition, students receive support, social/emotional guidance, and soft skill learning experiences.
As stated in School Board Policy AC and GBA, Hampton City Schools (“HCS”) does not discriminate with regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age, disability, ancestry, marital status, pregnancy, child birth or related medical conditions, status as a veteran, genetic information, or other characteristic protected by law in its programs, activities and employment practices and provides equal access to the Boy Scouts and other designated youth groups.
HCS also prohibits retaliation under School Board Policy GBAB for the purpose of interfering with a person’s rights and/or privileges under federal civil rights laws, which can include: (i) raising concerns with Division personnel about a civil rights violation; (ii) asserting a right or advocating for the rights of a student or employee under federal civil rights laws; or (iii) participating in a complaint investigation or related proceedings.
All individuals are encouraged to promptly report any incident they believe to be discrimination, harassment or retaliation in violation of HCS School Board Policy. All reports should be made to the HCS Compliance Officer, who also serves as the HCS Executive Director of Human Resources and Title IX/ADA Coordinator. Upon receiving a report of alleged discrimination, harassment or retaliation, the Compliance Officer shall promptly authorize an investigation into the complaint, determine whether the alleged act occurred, and determine whether any action must be taken to end or prevent further harassment, discrimination, or retaliation.
