Students meet and greet with Captain Barrington Irving

A hand full of student ambassadors who are a part of the 21st Century after-school program, had an opportunity to go to a fly-in event at Atlantic Aviation at the Newport News Williamsburg Airport on Monday, October 26, 2020, to meet with Captain Barrington Irving of Flying Classroom.

Irving brought material kits to distribute to the students to be used in their virtual after-school program. The STEM+ material kits will allow over 800 students to engage in the global expeditions of the Captain. For the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, Flying Classroom will provide virtual learning to the student participants who will complete their STEM+ projects. These expeditions include, but are not limited to; Ecosystems within the Amazon, Venom Saves Lives, Water Hydrodynamics, Erupt Volcanic Science, and Orbis: Flying Eye Hospital.

The Flying Classroom is a K-8 integrative STEM+ supplemental curriculum. While Flying Classroom includes standards and principles aligned to STEM, it also includes correlated activities to geography, informational literacy, writing, art, and social studies. Students work to develop critical thinking, collaboration, communication and cognitive development skills as they navigate through the expedition content. Each lesson within the Flying Classroom is based on a global expedition led by Captain Barrington Irving.

Captain Barrington Irving, is a renowned pilot, educator, explorer, and community leader. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Captain Irving moved to the United States with his family in 1989 and grew up in Miami, Florida, where he first became interested in STEM programs; specifically aviation at a young age. A Guinness Book record holder from 2007 to 2012, he was the youngest person to fly solo around the world. He is a record holder as the first African American to ever fly solo around the world.

He is also the founder of Experience Aviation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) designed to help middle and high school students explore aviation and other STEM-based careers and programs through hands-on learning experiences. He went on to start Flying Classroom, a STEM+-related digital curriculum for K through 8th grade that allows students to design innovative solutions to STEM+ field world issues.

Students across Hampton City Schools will get to virtually explore the world of STEM+ through Captain Irving’s innovative expeditions.
