Book Bus visits HCS students

It takes a village to help a child and that is just what happened when the Book Bus traveled into Hampton neighborhoods to give students an opportunity to check out library books.

On Friday, October 23, 2020, four brightly marked school buses traveled into our community neighborhoods to offer books to children for checkout. The buses made 28 stops and served approximately 150 families. Nearly 1,000 books were distributed. The stops and times were previously announced so that students and their parents would know when to expect them.

The event was coordinated with the school librarians, reading specialists, transportation and Jennifer Lockett of the department of innovation and professional learning, and Kelli Cedo, curriculum leader for language arts. A big shout out goes to all of these staff members for making the event such a success.

“Karen Soter, librarian at Jones Magnet Middle School said, “With students spending so much time online and at home, we felt strongly about getting books to students. This was a great way to go out in the community, make connections with our students and families, and to let our kids know that we are here for them.”

The Book Bus plans to roll out again in three weeks, based on students' schedules. Stay tuned for details!
