Andrews PreK-8 participates in Bring PE to Your Family Week

Andrews PreK-8 School participated in Bring PE to Your Family Week during the week of October 19 to 23, 2020. The event was sponsored by OpenPhysEd.com.

Physical education teachers Stephanie Knight and Nick Johansen sent a message to parents about the benefits of daily physical activity for children. They stated in their message that these benefits include increasing energy, focus, and readiness to learn as well as reducing stress and anxiety. They also said that being active is always important, but never more than during COVID-19.

Because physical activity has benefits for all ages, Knight and Johansen invited families to participate with their child(ren) during a physical education lesson. The benefits to parents of joining include a better understanding of the teaching and learning that goes on in physical education, and to experience firsthand the fun and engaging activities that are helping to keep their children healthy and active.

Activities were planned according to grade level.

PreK and kindergarten – played Candyland and worked on their locomotor skills
First, second, and third grade – played Paper Ball Knockout
Fourth and fifth grade – learned how to check their pulse and figure out their target heart rate

Over 100 families across the grade levels participated in the lessons.

"National bring your family to PE week really gave us the opportunity to spend time with some of our students as well as their families,” said Knight and Johansen. “We were able to provide fun, physically active lessons that our students and families could enjoy and participate in together. Other than getting to spend some time with our students, the second best part of it all was creating a massive green screen and having fun with it. It was a really rewarding week of teaching.”
