Middle school students participate in Second Annual Drone Camp

HCS Middle School students recently participated in the Second Annual Drone Camp sponsored by the Tuskegee Airmen Chapter of Hampton, Virginia.

On August 17 to 19, 2021, the Tuskegee Airmen Tidewater Chapter, led by Colonel Rickey Rodgers USAF(R), hosted their second annual Drone Camp. The camp consisted of 15 middle school students from Hampton City Schools. During the camp the students experienced the following: career opportunities working with drones; technology as it related to maneuvering the drones using an ipad; writing via Google forms; math as it related to positioning the drones at 45-360 degree angles as well as height measurements; science as it related to distance, speed, drag, thrust, lift, weight, and camera integrated geographical measurements; and the history of flight: past, present and future.

A new addition to the program this year included the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST)(FAA) certification. Each student took the test and passed, thereby, allowing them to fly their drones outdoors under 400 feet.

Dr. Janice Richison, HCS science curriculum lead; Daryle Rodgers, coordinator of out-of-school time program; Edwina Forrest, director of food and nutrition services; April Rollins, science and math office administrator; Colonel Clifton Douglas, USAF-R;  and Dr. Burrell, president of Tuskegee Airmen Chapter, all collaboratively worked together to provide this dynamic opportunity for our students.
