Hampton City Schools receives over $209k school security equipment grant from the Virginia Department of Education

Hampton City Schools (HCS) has received over $209,000 in state 2026-2027 School Security Equipment Grants to protect students, faculty and visitors. The $12 million in grants from the Virginia Department of Education were awarded to 399 schools in 91 school divisions. 

“Every student deserves to learn in a school where they feel safe, supported and ready to succeed,” said Secretary of Education, Dr. Jeffery Smith. “These investments give our local school divisions the resources to strengthen school security based on the needs of their individual communities. We are grateful for the partnership of school leaders across the Commonwealth who work every day to create safe and welcoming environments for Virginia’s students and educators.”

“Ensuring a safe learning environment is our top priority at Hampton City Schools,” said James Bailey, HCS security supervisor. “This funding will allow us to continue strengthening our safety and security infrastructure across the division. From upgrading bus and school radio equipment as we transition to a fully digital system, to enhancing our weapons detection units and visitor management equipment, these improvements will provide our staff with updated tools and technology to help keep our students, employees, and schools safe.”

A local match of 25 percent is required of most divisions.
