Hampton High School football coach Mike Smith reaches 500th win

Hampton High School varsity football coach Mike Smith is no stranger to winning. He achieved his 500th win on Saturday, September 18, 2021, when Hampton High School beat Menchville High School 25 to 14. Smith, won his first game on September 24, 1971. Many of his victories have come on the way to 15 state championship games and a record 12 state titles.

Smith shared, “The credits go to the players and coaches over the years for their hard work and parents’ sacrifices made so they could play. To all of you, I thank you for the opportunity to have been the coach . . .my family and the biggest crabber fan of all, my wife Lisa, . . .I love all of you.”

The first state title was achieved in 1975 followed by 1977, 1980, 1981, and then five consecutive state championship games from 1984-1988 winning the title in 1985, 1986, and 1988. Additional state titles were earned in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998. The Group AAA Division 5 state crown was won in 2005.

"Coach Smith's dedication and love for the Hampton High School football program is an inspiration,” said HHS Executive Principal Shameka Pollard. “I am honored and humbled to serve our school community with him. Achieving 500 victories takes tenacity, skill, and a lot of patience. Coach Smith is one of only three high school coaches in the country to earn this achievement. He is truly a legend.”

Congratulations Coach Smith on your 500th victory!
