Vice Mayor Jimmy Gray partners with Eaton Fundamental Middle School class

Students in Karen Parker’s sixth grade language arts class at Eaton Fundamental Middle School understand that someone important thinks they are special. They are excited that Vice Mayor Jimmy Gray sponsored their class for PTSA membership and paid ach student’s membership fee. The school has a goal of 400 PTSA members and the principal, Dr. Ken Crum, and the PTSA announced that the first class to get 100% will have a pizza party. Gray also joined the Eaton Fundamental Middle School PTSA, and Parker’s class hopes he comes back to dine with them.

Parker said that she showed her class pictures of the Hampton City Council and that several of her students said that they have already met the mayor. She also said that she will have another discussion with her class about the role of the City Council and how the city of Hampton, the Hampton School Board, and parents should continue to work together for the wellbeing of the students. When the school partners with the local community, it is a win-win situation.

“The students are excited that Vice Mayor Gray will visit our class,” said Parker. “One student already plans to get his autograph. When an important person visits you, you feel important. I want the students to feel important and to know they are not invisible.”

“I have to credit Mrs. Parker with initiating the partnership,” said Gray. “She reached out to me to ask for my support to help her sixth grade class win the PTA contest and it was an easy ‘yes’ for me. As a member of city council, I support HCS in ‘big ways’ through the city’s budget, but I also look for smaller opportunities to support our teachers and students. This was one of those opportunities that I couldn’t resist.”
