My Future, My Journey 2026: Freshmen Explore Pathways Through Immersive Career Experiences
On October 15, 2026, Hampton City Schools hosted its annual My Future, My Journey Career Exploratory (MFMJ) at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, bringing together more than 1,400 Freshman Academy students for an immersive exploration of academy pathways, postsecondary opportunities, and future careers.
Building on the reimagined format introduced in 2025, this year’s experience continued to move students beyond traditional career exploration by placing them directly into interactive, hands-on simulations designed in collaboration with community, business, postsecondary, and military partners.
Students rotated through four career-focused quadrants representing Business & Information Technology, Engineering & Technology, Creative Studies, and Public Safety, where they experienced real-world applications of the Academies of Hampton pathways. Throughout the simulations, students explored their interests, interacted with professionals, asked questions, and made connections between what they learn in the classroom and the opportunities available beyond high school.
The hands-on approach resonated with students. “I enjoyed the hands-on examples of the academies and careers,” one student shared. Another reflected on discovering a specific academy pathway, saying, “I enjoyed learning about the Health, Human, and Financial Services Academy at My Future, My Journey.”
Following the career simulations, students continued their exploration at College Row, where postsecondary institutions provided opportunities to learn more about college life, programs of study, admissions, and pathways after graduation. Christopher Newport University brought the college experience to life through an immersive dorm room display, giving students a tangible glimpse into what their future on a college campus could look like. The experience stood out to students, with one sharing, “I enjoyed the interactive simulations. I especially enjoyed seeing the CNU dorm room set up.”
Students also explored Business Row, where community and industry partners provided another opportunity to connect career exploration with the world beyond the classroom. Through conversations with professionals, students learned about organizations serving the Hampton Roads region, explored career opportunities, and gained greater insight into the many ways their academy experiences can connect to future employment and workforce opportunities.
Business Row also provided an opportunity to strengthen relationships between Hampton City Schools and its community partners. Perhaps most importantly, participating organizations are already considering how their involvement can continue to evolve beyond this year’s event. One partner shared, “We have already identified how we’d like to engage with students next year, and we are extremely excited to be a partner.”
That enthusiasm was echoed by other participating partners. “I always find this event such a treat! Thank you, everyone, for your hard work and dedication,” one partner shared. Another acknowledged the collaboration required to bring an experience of this scale to life, saying, “I know it takes a lot to plan such a huge event. Thank you for including us. We look forward to attending next year!”
The impact of My Future, My Journey extends beyond a single day of career exploration. The event represents a growing network of educators, businesses, community organizations, postsecondary institutions, and other partners working together to help students see, experience, and prepare for the possibilities ahead of them.
Through the Academies of Hampton, Hampton City Schools remains committed to providing students with meaningful career-connected learning experiences that connect education, industry, and postsecondary opportunities. My Future, My Journey 2026 demonstrated what is possible when schools and community partners work together to help students not only learn about their future possibilities, but experience them firsthand.
