Syms teacher is finalist for Bill of Rights Institute’s Civics Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Jordan Gray, civics and economics teacher at Syms Middle School. He has been named one of 10 finalists from across the country for the Bill of Rights Institute Teacher of the Year. He earned a $1,000 prize and is competing against finalists from Georgia, Arizona, Massachusetts, Connecticut, North Carolina, Tennessee, New Jersey, New York, and another teacher in Virginia. The winner, who will be announced later in October, will win an additional $5,000 prize.

The finalists were chosen after a nationwide search that invited fellow teachers, students, parents, and community members to nominate outstanding civics teachers. Nominees submitted essays reflecting on the role they play in helping students understand and practice the ideals of a free and just society.

Gray is a graduate of Christopher Newport University with a Master of Arts in Teaching. He has worked in Newport News and Williamsburg-James City County before coming to Hampton in 2022.

“Mr. Gray is an eighth-grade social studies teacher who has a genuine passion for teaching. He loves serving as the drama club sponsor, where he encourages students to express their creativity, build confidence, and explore their talents,” said Syms principal Dr. Patrina Jenkins.
