Cox Charities and Malcolm Mitchell champion literacy in Hampton City Schools

The Hampton Education Foundation (HEF) is proud to announce it has received a $5,000 grant from Cox Charities to support literacy initiatives across Hampton City Schools.

As part of this exciting partnership, New England Patriots Super Bowl champion and author Malcolm Mitchell visited Burbank Elementary School on October 7, 2025, to inspire students in grades 1–5 through the power of reading. Mitchell shared his personal journey and read his book with students, encouraging them to discover the joy and confidence that come from literacy.

Mitchell's latest children's book with Cox Communications is A World Within Reach, which celebrates the power of reading and digital literacy to unlock opportunities for young people. The book's main character uses magical goggles to connect with the world's knowledge, mirroring how affordable internet access and digital literacy can help close the digital divide and empower youth.

“His visit was an invaluable experience for our students, and he served as a true inspiration to our young student-athletes,” said Rasan Holmes, principal of Burbank Elementary School. “His message about finding joy in reading perfectly aligns with the message we strive to instill in our students each day.”

Every participating student received a signed copy of his book and several students received autographed footballs, making the day an unforgettable celebration of learning and leadership.

The Hampton Education Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to Cox Charities and Malcolm Mitchell for helping ignite a lifelong love of reading in our young scholars.
