Hampton City Schools Hosts 8th Annual My Future My Journey Expo
My Future My Journey Career Expo: A Gateway to Career Exploration
On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, over 1,200 students attended the My Future My Journey Career Expo, a signature event of the Academies of Hampton. This experience plays a vital role in helping 9th-grade students explore and investigate various careers, allowing them to make informed decisions about their future. Aligned with the self-discovery and exploration components of the Success 101 course, which all ninth graders take, the Expo offers an engaging platform for students to connect their interests with potential career pathways.
During the Expo, students interact with industry leaders, college representatives, and employers and engage in hands-on demonstrations that provide real-world insights into various professions. This year's standout feature was the technology section, which showcased drones, robots, and virtual reality. The event gave students an up-close look at cutting-edge innovations in tech-related careers.
With 88 vendors, representing industries aligned with Virginia’s 16 career clusters, students gained firsthand knowledge about the education and skills required for different professions. They explored engineering, healthcare, public safety, and technology sectors. Event highlights included the Newport News Shipbuilding MTX simulation trailer and local police and fire departments vehicles and equipment, which included a SWAT vehicle and state-of-the-art fire truck.
The Career Expo is designed not only to spark curiosity but also to help students:
Identify tools and technologies associated with various career paths
Understand the range of diverse careers within their community
Recognize the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed for specific professions
Relate their academic studies to future career goals and understand the importance of critical thinking and communication skills
Realize the importance of completing high school and how it directly correlates with expanded opportunities and long-term career success
“Students left this event with a clearer sense of direction, equipped with the insights and inspiration to pursue careers that align with their passions and aspirations,” said Veronica Hurd, director of the Academies of Hampton.
