Hampton City Schools launches Living Library 8th Grade Signature Experience

Hampton City Schools proudly introduces the Living Library 8th Grade Signature Experience, an innovative program that connects classroom learning with real-world exposure to diverse careers and community roles. Throughout the school year, all 8th-grade students from across the school division’s middle schools are participating in a series of hands-on learning activities designed to broaden their understanding of various professions and community contributions.

During this yearlong experience, students will explore career paths, community engagement, and personal passions through one-on-one conversations with individuals representing technical and professional careers. Recently at the kick-off event at the Hampton Library Main Branch, students met community members they selected based on their personal interests. Prior to their visits, students digitally “checked out” community partners, organized by Academy career quadrants, ensuring their chosen partners align with career fields that resonate with their future goals. To prepare for these meetings, students completed a reading and reflection assignment that helped them understand the importance of passion and career alignment before conducting interviews with their selected community members.

In addition to the library visit, students explored the Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center, where they viewed artwork from local artists and participated in a lesson focused on emotions in art. During their time at the center, students completed a scavenger hunt, analyzed various works of art, and created their own pieces inspired by nature or the artist they studied. This creative project allowed students to connect what they’ve learned with their own expressions of creativity.

Following these visits, students then choose from a variety of reflective activities designed to deepen their understanding of the Living Library experience, which will culminate in the 8th Grade Capstone Project. This capstone encourages students to reflect on the career awareness, networking skills, and personal growth they gain through the program.
