Hampton City Schools Lights Up for Afterschool!
Hampton City Schools proudly joined millions across the nation on October 24, 2024, to celebrate the annual Lights On Afterschool, a national event that highlights the vital role afterschool programs play in student success. These programs offer enriching, hands-on experiences that complement classroom learning and help students meet academic standards. Additionally, they foster family engagement with opportunities for active participation and educational development.
The Lights On Afterschool is a hallmark for the afterschool movement, generating national media coverage each year. Iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building “lit up” in support, and Hampton City followed suit by illuminating city hall, the Hampton Roads Convention Center, and the Virginia Air and Space Science Center in blue and yellow to celebrate Hampton City Schools afterschool programs.
Launched in 2000 by the Afterschool Alliance, the Lights On Afterschool is the only national event of its kind. Hampton boasts eight participating 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) schools: Bassette Elementary, Bryan Elementary, Forrest Elementary, Lindsay Middle, Mary T. Christian Elementary, Mary S. Peake Elementary, Syms Middle, and Tarrant Middle. These schools hosted special events showcasing the power of afterschool activities, inviting families and the community to participate.
