Bethel High School is awarded the VHSL Claudia Dodson Sportsmanship, Ethics & Integrity Award for 2022-2023

Bethel High School has received the Claudia Dodson Sportsmanship, Ethics & Integrity Award. This award, in conjunction with the Virginia High School League (VHSL), recognizes schools that have established policies and procedures that make sportsmanship a priority and an expectation within the school and school community. Bethel was one of only five schools to receive the award for 2022-2023.

The award was established in honor of the memory of Claudia Dodson, a VHSL assistant director from 1971-2002. According to the VHSL website, “Claudia was passionate and insistent that the educational basis of VHSL programs remain at the forefront. No one did more to promote standards of behavior expected from coaches, athletes, activities participants, students and team followers.”

“I am so proud of our student-athletes and coaches for winning the Claudia Dodson VHSL Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Award,” shared Bethel executive principal Dr. Tanya Howard. “This honor is awarded to school communities that prioritize sportsmanship. As one of only five schools in Virginia to receive this distinction, it is evident that Bethel High School coaches, athletic director, and administration have established procedures that promote standards of behavior expected from our coaches and athletes.”

The school will be recognized by the Hampton School Board on November 1, 2023.
