All HCS schools and offices are closed Monday, October 3.
This is an important message from Hampton City Schools regarding schools and offices being closed tomorrow, Monday, October 3, 2022.
The National Weather Service Wakefield has issued a coastal flood warning in effect from midnight tonight to 8 PM Tuesday for the city of Hampton.
Additionally, the city’s Emergency Management has been in direct communication with the National Weather Service (Wakefield). There is now high confidence that tide levels will reach major flooding levels at Sewells Point and will be the highest level of flooding at Sewells Point in 10 years.
As such, the city is predicting impacts of severe flooding which is said to cause extensive flooding of numerous roads and buildings. Water is expected to be 2 to 3 feet or more above ground level in some areas with severe flooding extending inland from the waterfront and shoreline with numerous roads being impassable under several feet of water.
Based on this information, and the high potential of impact to various parts of our city, all HCS schools and offices will be closed on Monday, October 3, 2022, for students and staff. This includes after-school and evening activities. Additionally, the current forecast shows the potential for strong winds, which Dominion Energy has advised to prepare for additional power outages. This will not be a virtual day for students due to the potential impact for many of our families and staff. An additional communication will be forwarded to FLEx families.
While this creates challenges, we sincerely appreciate your patience and support as we work together to make the best possible decisions for our students and staff. We are continuing to monitor the impacts of this predicted flooding and we will communicate with our staff and families if additional adjustments are needed to our school week.
