Expanding Dual Enrollment supplements and certification support for HCS teachers
We are excited to announce a new initiative designed to expand access to college-level courses for our students by supporting Dual Enrollment (DE) teachers. This year, Hampton City Schools is implementing two support methods for Dual Enrollment. First, the school division is providing a stipend for teachers who lead DE courses, and second, by offering tuition reimbursement to help teachers gain the necessary credentials for Dual Enrollment.
Supplements
Teachers who teach Dual Enrollment courses currently receive a supplement of $350 per section.
Dual Enrollment Tuition Reimbursement
Hampton City Schools (HCS) is here to support teachers interested in teaching Dual Enrollment courses. Eligible teachers can receive tuition and fee reimbursement up to $1,500 per course. To teach Dual Enrollment, teachers must hold a master’s degree in the specific content area or have a master’s degree plus 18 graduate credit hours in the subject they plan to teach.
At Hampton City Schools, we are dedicated to preparing students to be college, career, and life ready. Offering Dual Enrollment courses is one of the ways we challenge all students with rigorous coursework. These classes allow students to gain college-level experience while still in high school, benefiting from college resources while learning in the supportive environment of their school.
In partnership with Virginia Peninsula Community College, HCS has steadily increased dual enrollment offerings, instructors, and opportunities as well as the number of college credits earned by HCS students. Since 2015, students have earned 42,254 dual enrollment credits. This has saved students and families nearly $7M in Virginia Community College System tuition or nearly $34M in tuition, room and board at a public college or university in Virginia. Additionally, since 2021, 157 students from the Virginia Peninsula Community College Academy of the College Experience (ACE) have graduated with an associate’s degree before receiving their high school diploma, bringing the total number to 161 associate degree recipients through dual enrollment since its inception.
