The Day of the Dead holiday is recognized by HCS Spanish teachers

On November 1 and 2, 2023, teachers across the Hampton City Schools (HCS) division celebrated the Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday, el día de los muertos, that celebrates and honors the lives of deceased loved ones and reflects the positive impact of their lives. It is a joyous and loving holiday. 

Sra. Christina Pearson, Spanish teacher from Jones Middle School, created the tree of life with the whole school to celebrate the lives of family members who are gone but not forgotten.

An altar was created by Sra. Mingee, Spanish teacher from Hampton High School, and her students to honor the family members who are gone yet never forgotten.

Sra. Lausell Benavides, Spanish teacher from Syms Middle School, dressed like La Catrina, an iconic character that represents the beautiful woman who cares for the remembered souls.

“Our Spanish teachers believe that cultural competency is an important aspect of teaching language,” shared Maria Oelrich, HCS teacher specialist for foreign language.

The Day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2, though other days, such as October 31 or November 6, may be included depending on the locality. It is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed, and is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage.
