Students gain real-world budgeting experience through “Bite of Reality” simulation

On May 5, 2026, students from all four of the high schools who are receiving specialized academic support took a “Bite of Reality” through an interactive financial literacy simulation designed to give them a taste of real-world financial challenges. Throughout the experience, students learned how to make informed financial decisions while navigating the realities of living on a budget. Thank you to BayPort Credit Union for hosting the event.

 

Each student was assigned an occupation, salary, credit score, family scenario, and debt responsibilities. Using this information, they worked through real-life budgeting decisions such as purchasing housing, transportation, food, insurance, and other daily expenses — including unexpected costs that arose throughout the day-long simulation.

 

The experience encouraged students to think critically about financial responsibility, planning, and decision-making while helping them better understand the connection between career choices, income, and independent living.
