Bethel High School students gain real-world experience at Harlem Globetrotters 100-Year Centennial

Students from Bethel High School’s Academy of Media, Arts & Design (MAD) recently had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on learning experience at the Harlem Globetrotters 100-Year Centennial, where they applied their skills in a live, high-energy environment.

Students in the Digital Media and Journalism pathways attended the event as credentialed media, gaining access to capture content, observe production, and engage in real-time storytelling. From the moment they arrived, students demonstrated professionalism and readiness, navigating the arena to collect footage, conduct interviews, and document the overall experience.

This opportunity was made possible through the support of Advisory Board member Beck G, who organized and hosted the experience. Students were able to meet stage and tour managers, receive press passes, and gain behind-the-scenes exposure to event operations and media coverage.

Participating students included Khamari Johnson (senior, digital media), Amarian Mitchell (senior, digital media), and Savannah Jones (junior, journalism II). Their ability to adapt, collaborate, and remain focused—even when faced with technical challenges—was a strong reflection of their preparation and commitment to their craft.

Following the event, students in the Social Media Marketing pathway extended the experience in the classroom by developing post-event content. As a class, they worked to create social media campaigns that recapped and highlighted key moments from the event. One featured reel, created by sophomore Aleshia Powell, captured the excitement and energy of the experience.

Beck G shared, “The students were phenomenal. It was evident they have received strong instruction. They demonstrated professionalism, preparedness, polish, posture, and potential.”

Travis Oliver, academy principal of Media, Arts & Design, added, “Experiences like this are what bring learning to life for our students. They were able to step into a professional environment, apply their skills in real time, and represent Bethel with excellence. This is exactly the type of opportunity that prepares our students for college, careers, and beyond.”

This experience reflects Bethel High School’s commitment to providing real-world, career-connected learning opportunities that allow students to explore their passions and apply their skills beyond the classroom.
