HCS is recognized as a Beacon of Excellence for transition work

Sherry Hildebrandt, transition specialist for exceptional students for Hampton City Schools (HCS), and the school division were recently recognized as a Beacon of Excellence for the division’s transition work. Dr. Paul Wehman, interim director of the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (RRTC) at Virginia Commonwealth University, announced the recognition at the Statewide Transition Leaders Academy where he showcased the division and Hildebrandt in a video that can be viewed here.

“I want to sincerely thank each of you for the heart, effort, and collaboration you bring to this work every day,” said Hildebrandt. “Recognition like this only happens because of the collective dedication of our entire team. I’m so grateful to be part of it with you.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Hildebrandt for this uplifting moment—what an incredible honor and a powerful reminder of the profound impact your vision, coupled with the collective dedication of our team and our truly exceptional HCS/DARS collaborative partnership, continue to have on our scholars,” said Tanisha Urquhart, HCS special education coordinator. “Thank you for your tireless advocacy, diligence, leadership, and unwavering commitment to Excellence with Intentionality for all of our HCS scholars with disabilities. Your work is deeply appreciated and does not go unnoticed.”

Beacons of Excellence

Virginia's Collaborative Model for Pre-Employment Transition Services works with educators, vocational rehabilitation counselors, Pre-ETS providers, and families across all 6 DARS Districts. Throughout the Commonwealth, there are examples of Pre-ETS best practices in action. These Beacons of Excellence highlight partnerships between schools, counselors, and providers. These collaborations have enhanced Pre-ETS in a variety of ways, including increased services, as well as better coordination of services for students, family engagement, work-based learning opportunities, and career exploration.
