Carnival of flavors: students stir up Mardi Gras magic
Students from the Academy of Media Arts and Design (MAD) at Bethel High School and the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at Phoebus High School participated in the Tastefully Yours Mardi Gras event. The event was sponsored by the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank on May 1, 2025, at the Hampton Roads Convention Center. Over 30 businesses were in attendance and presented their best culinary dishes.
The Academy of Media Arts and Design designed and assembled the Mardi Gras themed booth. The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism presented three dishes – Chicken & Andouille Gumbo with Crispy Crawfish; Blackened Catfish with Four Cheese Grits; and Mini King Cakes.
The Hampton City Schools (HCS) students wowed the crowd and over 100 people expressed an interest in learning more about the transformation within HCS that teaches the students real world applications. They were visited by School Board members, City Council members, Hampton city manager, and community guests.
The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism was awarded second place for most creative dish. Maurice Rogers, co-chair of the MAD Academy advisory board, won first place for best costume.
“It is a privilege to provide real-world opportunities for our students. The dedication and passion of both the Media Arts and Design Academy and the Hospitality and Tourism Academy are inspiring. Watching them work and execute at a high level in such a professional environment showcases the valuable skills they are learning. Attendees were amazed by the displays and food, all created by high school students. I’m proud to be part of these meaningful experiences,” shared Rogers.
Congratulations to all on the outstanding representation of Hampton City Schools and the talents of our students.
