Aliyah Boyce places first in the Third District Congressional Art Competition
We are proud to share that Aliyah Boyce, a freshman at Kecoughtan High School, won first place in the 3rd District Congressional Art Competition. She was recognized by Congressman Bobby Scott on May 27, 2025, during a special ceremony at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center. Her winning piece, titled “The Mirror Holds Its Tongue,” was created under the guidance of her art teacher, Ashley Brooks.
In addition, Jiselle Banks, a senior at Kecoughtan High School, received fourth place for her powerful artwork titled “Self.”
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent across the country. Since its inception in 1982, more than 650,000 students have participated in the Artistic Discovery competition. Entries are submitted through congressional offices, and a panel of local artists selects the winners.
As part of her award, Aliyah will travel to Washington, D.C., to attend a Congressional Reception honoring student winners from across the nation. Her artwork will be displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building, viewed by hundreds of thousands of visitors. She also received a generous basket of art supplies to support her continued creative journey.
"Aliyah’s self portrait titled 'The Mirror Holds its Tongue' is a beautiful example of her artistic talent and creative abilities," said Brooks. "Her skill and attention to detail is truly impressive for someone her age. Having her work recognized at the Congressional level as a ninth grader speaks volumes about her dedication and creativity. I am incredibly proud of all she has accomplished and grateful for the opportunity to support her growth this year."
Congratulations to Aliyah, Jiselle, and Ms. Brooks for their outstanding achievements!
