Hampton Reads One Book Program hits a home run with students
Hampton City Schools (HCS) is stepping up to the plate once again with its Hampton Reads One Book program, bringing baseball-themed stories and engaging activities to elementary students across the division.
This year’s selections include Little Rhino: Dugout Hero for students in PreK through 2nd grade, a heartwarming story that highlights teamwork and determination. Students in grades 3–5 received Hero Two Doors Down, an inspiring true story about courage, friendship, and breaking barriers both on and off the field.
To help kick off the initiative, videos were recorded of Alexis Swann of TowneBank, along with Dr. John Caggiano, HCS deputy superintendent and chief of staff, and HCS superintendent Dr. Raymond Haynes, reading from the selected books. The videos were shared with teachers to play for students as the program launched.
TowneBank also supported the initiative with a donation through the Hampton Education Foundation, helping make the program possible.
Schools throughout the division have planned a variety of baseball-themed activities during the month of March to build excitement around reading. The food and nutrition team also joined the effort by incorporating the theme into the school menu. During the first week of March, which coincides with National School Breakfast Week, students could choose from “Breakfast of Champions” options. On March 31, students will enjoy a special baseball-themed lunch.
