Fourth graders attend concert by Virginia Symphony Orchestra
Over 1,200 Hampton City Schools (HCS) fourth graders and their teachers recently attended a Virginia Symphony Orchestra (VSO) concert, performing their program, The Orchestra Moves. In class, the students learned about melody, rhythm, and movement. The students became part of the performance. Singing, clapping, and playing recorders along with the musicians, they discovered how music moves through time and space, how melodies rise and fall, and how rhythms can carry energy and emotion. Throughout the performance, the students connected what they learned in school to the real world of professional music-making. The tradition of attending a VSO performance has occurred in HCS for over 20 years.
“Great experience, as always! My students always love the concert, and I love coming back every year,” said Burbank Elementary School music educator Cassie Wintermute.
