Smith Elementary School mural showcases creativity and environmental stewardship
Students, staff, and families recently came together to celebrate the unveiling of the new Smith Elementary School “Home of the Sharks” mural, a vibrant display of school pride and environmental responsibility.
Designed by art teacher Victoria Martin, the mural consists of four 4-by-8-foot panels and was created using approximately 10,000 recycled plastic bottle caps collected by students, families, and staff members. The project transformed everyday recyclable materials—including bottle caps, jars, lids, and other household items—into a colorful work of art that now serves as a centerpiece on campus.
Throughout the process, students gained hands-on experience with recycling and environmental conservation while developing artistic and collaborative skills. Students painted the mural design, sorted and matched bottle cap colors to the artwork, and worked together to bring the vision to life. Fifth-grade student leaders assisted with finishing touches, while the school's dedicated custodial staff and Martin's family helped install and secure the permanent display in the courtyard.
The completed mural stands as a testament to what can be achieved when an entire school community works together toward a common goal. Beyond beautifying the campus, the project inspired creativity, promoted environmental stewardship, and demonstrated the power of teamwork and community involvement.
