Hampton School Board recognizes Christopher Newport University as VSBA Business Honor Roll recipient

Brandon Jones, senior director of School Partnerships and Outreach at Christopher Newport University (CNU), and Sabine Rogers, CNU's director of Strategic Partnership, accepted a Resolution, certificate, and coins from the Hampton School Board in recognition of CNU being named to the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Business Honor Roll. The individuals were recognized at the School Board meeting on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

Local businesses - large and small, corporate-owned or family-run - play a key role in supporting our communities and local schools. They have the power to shape community attitudes about public schools.

The VSBA Business Honor Roll is a way for local school divisions to recognize these local businesses, colleges, and universities for their support and to say “thank you” for their vital contributions.

As HCS’s colleges, and universities inaugural K–12 Education Partner, better known as Hampton Captains, CNU has demonstrated a deep and sustained commitment to advancing student success through three strategic pillars: Leadership Development, Industry Advancement, and support of the K–12 Learning Continuum.

Through this partnership, CNU is co-designing the division’s K–12 Ambassador Program — an initiative created to elevate student voice while cultivating the leadership capacity of young people so they may invest in and strengthen the communities that matter most to them.

In addition, CNU is partnering with HCS to design a comprehensive internship structure that supports academy students while also creating meaningful opportunities for college students to engage and integrate within Hampton City Schools. CNU has hosted more than 700 students through BizTalk and continues to collaborate actively with our division to accelerate meaningful transformation across our schools and community.

CNU serves as an active member of the Academies of Hampton Steering Committee, helping to guide the implementation of Master Plan 2.0 and ensuring that the necessary systems and structures are in place to sustain this division-wide transformation.

The generosity and dedication of CNU play a vital role in strengthening community engagement, expanding opportunities for students, and reinforcing the core values embodied in the Portrait of a Hampton Graduate.

“Thank you and we are honored to accept this recognition,” said Jones. “A partnership is more than one person so I think it is only fair to give right to the other part and that is Hampton City Schools, the Academies of Hampton, the staff and team, and of course, the students. I am also excited for what the partnership will be. The things we are talking about are only going to grow.”

Hampton City Schools is honored to partner with Christopher Newport University in advancing opportunities for our students and community.
