Students earn Seal of Biliteracy distinction
Congratulations to five students who successfully challenged a language exam that, upon conferment and completion of their Hampton City Schools (HCS) diploma, will receive the Seal of Biliteracy.
These students challenged language exams in Spanish and American Sign Language (ASL). Congratulations to Josephine Crawford from Kecoughtan High School (ASL), Annasofia Medel from Bethel High School (Spanish), Bryan Ortiz-Fuentes from Bethel High School (Spanish), Jaylene Portalatin from Bethel High School (Spanish), and Joshua Garcia from Phoebus High School (Spanish).
Hampton City Schools is proud to offer students the opportunity to earn the Virginia Seal of Biliteracy, awarded by the Virginia Department of Education. To receive this distinction, students must demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English, pass the end-of-course reading and writing SOL assessments, and meet all HCS diploma requirements. Eligible students may take the language proficiency exam in their junior or senior year.
Those who earn the Seal will receive a certificate signed by the Governor of Virginia, the President of the Virginia Board of Education, and the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The official Seal of Biliteracy is also affixed to the student’s diploma.
