Jones Magnet Middle School Sewing Club grows in size and impact
Over the past two years, the Sewing Club at Jones Magnet Middle School, led by Kelly Smith and Cathy Brady, has flourished, developing not only students' skills but also their sense of community service.
The club began modestly in the 2023–2024 school year with just three dedicated members who worked together to complete their very first quilt—from cutting the fabric squares to stitching them into a finished piece. Their dedication laid the groundwork for what would become a thriving club.
In the 2024–2025 school year, interest in the Sewing Club soared, growing to include 15 enthusiastic students. With their expanded membership and increased experience, the club took on a variety of sewing projects, including tote bags, pillowcases, pot holders, pajama bottoms, and not just one, but two quilts—one completed and another currently in progress.
The completed quilts were donated to Peninsula Angel Quilters, a local non-profit organization that provides handmade quilts to children in need. Cali Mowary, head of Peninsula Angel Quilters, visited the Jones club to share more about the organization’s mission and personally to accept the students’ quilts. Her visit gave the students an inspiring perspective on how their skills and creativity can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
The Sewing Club continues to be a space for students to learn, create, and give back, and it’s clear that their impact will only continue to grow.
