Bethel High School teacher makes history at National Veterans Golden Age Games

Carolyn Phillips, a teacher at Bethel High School and proud graduate of Phoebus High School (Class of 1984), made history at the 2025 National Veterans Golden Age Games held in Memphis, Tennessee, from May 31 to June 6. Phillips competed as a member of the first-ever women’s basketball team in the event’s 39-year history.

A lifelong athlete, Phillips credits her former Phoebus coach, Michael Talon, with instilling in her a passion for strong defense and team play—skills she says continue to serve her well four decades later. “Coach Talon taught me to play defensively so I could assist the team in winning, and I’m still using those skills 40 years later,” said Phillips.

Her team’s historic run ended with a silver medal, marking a proud and groundbreaking moment in the Games and for Phillips personally.

Hampton City Schools celebrates Ms. Phillips’ achievement and her continued example of perseverance, teamwork, and trailblazing spirit.
